The Federal Government has officially abolished the 5% excise duty on telecommunications services, providing relief to millions of Nigerians who depend on mobile calls and internet access.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) made the disclosure in a statement posted on X on Thursday

The levy, first introduced under former President Muhammadu Buhari, had been applied to both voice calls and data subscriptions. It drew widespread backlash from telecom operators and consumer rights groups, who warned that it would worsen the financial strain on citizens already grappling with rising living costs.

Confirming the policy shift, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Aminu Maida, said President Bola Tinubu directed the removal of the charge during deliberations on the recently enacted Finance Act.

“This is a clear signal that the government is listening to the concerns of Nigerians and is committed to making communication more affordable,” Maida stated
