Ifeoluwa Adekalu, a nursing mother, was shot and killed by a Rapid Response Squad (RRS) member at the Okesa Police post in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Thursday afternoon.
Witnesses said that while the officer was celebrating a colleague’s promotion, he discharged his weapon, striking the woman across the street.
Despite being taken to the hospital immediately, the victim passed away from her wounds.
Adewale Adeniran, the commissioner of police for Ekiti State, confirmed the incident and said the offending officer had been arrested and disarmed.
According to the Nigerian Police Act, the officer will be questioned, CP Adeniran continued.
According to close sources, Ifeoluwa Adekalu, 28, of Ondo State, was a hardworking individual who struggled to make ends meet.
She was employed by a number of hotels in Ado Ekiti as well as BOVAS Petrol Station as a station attendant.
According to investigations, the incident happened while she was returning home after paying her rent.
The remains of the victim would be transported to her parents in Ondo State for burial, according to the Ekiti Police Command.
