The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kaduna State University branch, has announced plans to embark on an indefinite strike starting on February 11 due to unresolved welfare concerns. The union’s chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, and secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri, signed a letter addressed to the national body seeking approval for the action.

The letter highlighted the union’s decision to embark on the strike following the non-response from the Kaduna State Government regarding their grievances. Some of the issues raised by the union include:

– *Nonpayment of Salaries*: five months’ salaries from May to September 2022, 60% of September 2017, and other withheld salaries of academic staff.

– *Nonpayment of Allowances*: Earned Academic Allowance from 2015 to 2020, and Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme from 2016 to 2023.

– *Pension and Insurance*: failure to remit pensions from 2009 to 2019, promotion arrears from 2019 to 2023, and Group Life Insurance for deceased academic staff from 2020 to date.

The lecturers had met with Gov. Uba Sani on August 17, 2024, to discuss these matters, and the governor had promised to pay the outstanding entitlements. However, despite several follow-up letters and appeals, the government has failed to respond, prompting the union to take industrial action.

In a letter dated January 17, 2025, the union reminded the governor of his commitment, stating, “We are writing to remind you that today, Tuesday, January 7, 2025, marks three weeks since the meeting was held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, and we are yet to receive any information on the payment modalities as promised by His Excellency.”

The union appealed for prompt intervention, saying, “We are appealing for your prompt intervention to consolidate on the gains of the previous deliberations and agreement made to forestall industrial dispute and crisis in KASU.”

With no response from the government, the union has decided to proceed on an indefinite strike to press for the resolution of the outstanding welfare issues.

The union stated that it had exhausted all avenues to resolve the issues amicably and had no option but to embark on the strike. The indefinite strike is scheduled to begin on February 11.

In a letter to the national body, the union’s chairman and secretary explained that the decision to embark on the strike was taken after the government failed to respond to their grievances.

The union’s letter to the national body sought approval for the strike action, citing the unresolved welfare concerns as the reason for the industrial action.

The Kaduna State University branch of ASUU has been seeking the payment of outstanding entitlements, including salaries, allowances, and pensions, which have been withheld by the state government.

The strike is expected to affect academic activities at the university, with students likely to be affected by the industrial action.
