The state of Kano, which is ranked 18th out of 36 states in the current online voter registration drive, has drawn criticism from the Kano government.

When the Kwankwasiyya writers and musicians association met with the state’s voter registration awareness committee on Wednesday to solicit the group’s assistance in raising public awareness of the significance of voter card registration, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, revealed this information.

During their meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kano, Waiya disclosed that about 5,000 individuals had finished the preliminary phases of the free online registration. Later data, however, revealed that 1,379,342 Nigerians had registered nationally.

He lamented Kano’s low registration rate of 10,000, which put the state in 18th place, behind a number of states with lower populations. Waiya stated, “This is disturbing, because Kano, as the most populous state, is expected to lead in voter registration.”

He emphasised that Kano now has six million registered voters, but that the goal is to raise that number to ten million before the national elections in 2027. He called for further efforts to mobilise the local population.
