The families of the young couple who just were married in secret without their parents’ permission have now agreed to a new, formal ceremony that follows Islamic principles, marking a major change in the course of events in Kano.
The breakthrough occurred when Fatima’s father gave the local commander of the Kano Municipal Hisbah Board permission to serve as her guardian (waliyyi) during the rearranged marriage ceremony.
Residents of Yakasai, the neighborhood where the original incident occurred, took the initiative to raise the bride price to ₦150,000, and this decision followed their lead.
The Hisbah Board, which will now supervise and perform the new marriage in compliance with Islamic customs, received the money in its official account.
According to Yusif Garba, a major organizer of the bride price collection, the community felt obliged to stand by the young couple because they had acted naively. Instead of condemning such young people, he underlined the significance of guiding them.
Ustaz Hamidan Tanko Alasaka, the chief Hisbah commander for Kano Municipal, confirmed the news and stated that the new wedding is currently being planned.
He confirmed that the full ₦150,000 bride price had been paid and that the wedding will take place shortly, this time in complete accordance with cultural and religious customs.
The 22-year-old groom and 16-year-old bride were dissolved by the Hisbah board after friends performed their wedding without their parents’ approval, according to a previous ZINGTIE article.
