As military operations against armed groups in the Northwest escalate and peace efforts in Katsina State gain momentum, neighboring Kano State is suddenly confronted with a new security dilemma due to an inflow of bandits seeking safety in its border areas.

Many families in the impacted border villages have been compelled by the development to leave their homes and seek refuge in towns like Shanono and Faruruwa, abandoning their farmlands, livestock, and means of subsistence out of fear, residents told ZINGTIE.

Following many raids in the region, the Nigerian military stated on November 4 that 19 bandits had been killed in an operation in Shanono Local Government Area.

Due to ongoing threats from bandits who have been intimidating locals and interfering with daily life, a number of towns, including Tsamiya and Yan Kwana, Santar Abuja, Tudun Fulani, Malamai, Goron Dutse, and Kulki, have apparently been abandoned.

Since then, soldiers from the Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have set up camps in Farin Ruwa and Shanono. Major General Wase, the Commander of Sector 1, has visited the troops to raise spirits and evaluate the situation on the ground.

In response to the growing concern, retired Army Colonel Ambassador Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), Kano State Chapter, has strongly advised the government, security services, and local communities on how to keep the situation from getting worse.

In a statement released on Saturday, Adamu cautioned that a large number of bandits who were escaping military pressure in Katsina are now regrouping in forests near the border between Kano and Katsina, putting lives, property, and agricultural in rural Kano at grave risk.

“If urgent action is not taken, the situation could spread deeper into Kano and become a major security challenge,” he cautioned.

In flashpoints including Tsamiya, Faruruwa, Goron Dutse, and Tudun Fulani, the Miyetti Allah leader encouraged the Kano State Government and security agencies to bolster border security by stationing soldiers, police, and civil defense officers.

He advocated for community-based intelligence collection and urged locals, farmers, and herders to collaborate closely with law enforcement to exchange information that might stop attacks. Along with security awareness campaigns in rural communities, Adamu advocated for the creation of special patrol teams and joint checkpoints to safeguard farmlands and grazing areas.

He also urged for increased interstate cooperation between Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna to exchange intelligence and coordinate security measures, as well as humanitarian aid for families displaced by the recent attacks.

“Security is a collective responsibility, not the duty of government alone,” Adamu said. “We must all work together, government, security agencies, community leaders, and local organizations , to confront this threat before it grows worse.”

Authorities in Kano are currently under pressure to stop the growing bandit threat from spreading throughout the state, with both the military and local leaders stepping up their efforts.
