Katsina: Man allegedly kills neighbour over washing line dispute

A 35-year-old man named Aminu has been taken into custody by Katsina State police on suspicion of fatally stabbing his neighbor Mallam Masa’udu during a fight over the usage of a public washing line.

The event happened on Thursday night in Katsina city, close to the Ministerial Quarters and Fatima Shema Estate.

According to witnesses, Aminu allegedly forbade Masa’udu from using the communal washing line, which led to a dispute between the two men who had laundry companies in nearby stores. Aminu is accused of stepping on Masa’udu’s wet garments and throwing them to the ground, which intensified the conflict.

Other locals apparently tried to defuse the situation, but Aminu armed himself with a knife, barged into a nearby store where Masa’udu had taken sanctuary, and repeatedly stabbed him.

After the initial attack, the victim attempted to escape, but Aminu pursued him and repeatedly stabbed him, according to an eyewitness. According to reports, Masa’udu was stabbed at least seven times.

Following the distress call, members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) hurried the victim to a private hospital nearby, where he was pronounced dead. Later, the Katsina General Hospital received his remains.

Aminu was taken into arrest right away and is being held by the police while the inquiry is ongoing.

The two men had a history of disagreements, according to community sources, including a lawsuit that Aminu filed last year charging Masa’udu of defamation and other offenses, but the court rejected it for lack of proof.

The deceased, a father of six and a native of Kaita Local Government Area, was said to have lived there for a long period. Since then, he has been laid to rest according to Islamic customs.
