Kenneth Okonkwo, a senior member of the Labour Party (LP), has announced that he is no longer a member of the party under Julius Abure’s leadership.
He made the revelation on Friday during Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television program, while acknowledging that he is still a member of the LP.
“As it is now, I have already left if Abure is the Chairman,” he said.
ZINGTIE recalls that in July 2024, the Nollywood actor-turned-politician announced his exit from LP.
He also broken out with the party’s former presidential contender, Peter Obi.
However, during the broadcast, Okonkwo, a former spokesman for the Labour Party’s presidential campaign committee, clarified his resignation, arguing that he remains a member of the LP.
He highlighted that he opposed the LP leadership under Abure.
“I am a member of the Labour Party, but not under Julius Abure. If Abure manages to wangle himself in and becomes the National Chairman, it is automatic,” he stated.
According to ZINGTIE, the Labour Party is in turmoil, with both the Caretaker Committee, led by Esther Nenadi Usman, and Abure vying for the party’s leadership.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, previously annulled Abure’s leadership, claiming that the national convention breached the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
The scenario caused the party to designate Usman, a former senator representing Kaduna South, as chair of its 29-member caretaker committee on September 4, 2024, after Abia State Governor Alex Otti called the party’s stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia.
Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate for 2023, and his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, were among the top party officials who attended the gathering.
In January, the Abuja Court of Appeal confirmed Abure’s position as Labour Party’s National Chairman.
In a judgement handed on January 17 by Hamma Barka, the court decided that its earlier ruling in November 2024, recognising Abure as the party’s chairman, is still legitimate and has not been reversed by any court.
The verdict followed two separate appeals submitted by Nenadi Usman, the party’s caretaker committee, and INEC.
