Labour Party disowns suspension of National Chairman Julius Abure

The Labour Party’s National Working Committee has labeled the suspension of Barrister Julius Abure, the party’s national chairman, as fraudulent by the executives of Ward 3 in Arue-Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government.

According to ZINGTIE, the State Working Committee reportedly approved the party’s national chairman’s alleged suspension in Benin City on Friday, May 24, 2024.

The National Working Committee of the party responded to the suspension on Saturday, May 25, 2024, stating that the executives of Ward 3, Arue-Uromi, Esan North East, Edo State, had not suspended the national chairman.

In a May 25, 2024, statement signed by the party’s national press secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the ward chairman of the party said,

According to the party constitution, Thompson Ehiguese was not authorized to dismiss or suspend the national chairperson.

Ifoh further stated that the ward’s chairman, Thompson Ehiguese, refuted the reported suspension in a widely shared video, noting that the ward leadership is devoted to the chairman and fully aware that the party constitution does not authorize it to remove or suspend the national chairman.

He asserts that the national chairman cannot be suspended by the ward, the local government, or even the state due to constitutional limitations.

“Court of Appeal, Benin Division on August 14 2023 presided over by Justice Theresa Ngolika Orji-Abadua in a case brought before it by Lucky Shaibu and others against Julius Abure and others corroborated with the judgement of the lower court in their ruling that the National Chairman of the Labour Party cannot be suspended or removed by the Ward executive,” he said.

He clarified that the party’s leadership is looking into the origin of the alleged suspension letter and will take swift action in line with party policies to impose discipline on any party officer found guilty of contravening the party’s rules.
