Ahead of Lagos State’s local government elections on July 12, the Labour Party has announced 26 candidates for chairmanships.
In Lagos on Saturday, Pastor Dayo Ekong, the state chairwoman of the party, verified the incident.
The candidates won primary polls on Friday in 26 different places throughout the state, according to Ekong. The party would not be fielding candidates in 30 councils for strategic reasons, she explained, adding that the primaries were held in just 26 of Lagos State’s 57 councils.
She listed Ikeja, Surulere, Agege, Igbogbo-Baiyeku, Lagos Island East, Lagos Island West, and Ajeromi-Ifelodun as some of the locations where the Labour Party will not nominate candidates for chairmanships.
Ekong also said that in order to accommodate the 27 candidates anticipated to run in the contest, the party’s primary election in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government would be delayed.
Mr. Seyi Ipinlaye, a former secretary of the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government, is one of the candidates that won the party’s ticket for that council after the primaries.
Mr. Abudu Akinlola won in Ojo LG, while Mr. Oluwafemi Fadairo won in Ojokoro LCDA. Dr. Hassan Ademola won in Itire-Ikate LCDA, and Biola Samson won an uncontested ticket in Oriade LCDA.
Among the other candidates includes: Mr. Abiodun Adegun (Coker-Aguda).

Also on the list are: Paul Ayanlola (Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye)

Ekong called the primaries a triumph for the party and praised their calm and peaceful conduct.
“The primaries were conducted successfully. I am particularly happy that the LGAs primaries went well in almost all local governments.
“They were free, credible and transparent. For areas with some issues, we thank God the security operatives invited were able to douse tension, and at the end of the day, the primary held.
“It was a great day for Labour Party in Lagos,” Ekong said.
