The crisis roiling the Lagos State House of Assembly is taking on a dangerously monstrous scale, according to a warning issued Monday by Fouad Oki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

He added that the current speakership dispute would be the mother of all state legislative crises in Nigeria and that, if let to continue, the Rivers Assembly battle would be trivial in comparison to that of Lagos.

A few hours after armed security guards from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services broke into the sacred chamber, the party leader made this claim on Channels Television’s Politics Today show on Monday.

It took hours for Mojisola Meranda, the recently elected Speaker, to be allowed entry due to the security guards.

After lawmakers passed a vote of confidence in her, she broke down in tears as she finally presided over the plenary.

“If you see what happened today, you will begin to look at Rivers State, the mayhem that is also consuming to Osun State, you look at what is also happening in Kano, you put all of these together, and it will be like a child’s play to (that of) Lagos,” Oki told Channels Television.

The Lagos Assembly has been enmeshed in a leadership struggle for weeks since Mudashiru Obasa was removed as speaker.

Obasa has challenged the procedure in court, claiming that his removal was unlawful.

Oki called the chaos at the Lagos Assembly on Monday a humiliating display and a blow to democracy.

“Today is a sad day for me and indeed for all lovers of democracy in Nigeria,” he added.

Oki said “enough of begging and enough of appeasement”, saying that he and other comrades who were in the trenches during the fight for democracy would defend what they believed in.

“If there are those who do not have a sense of history, those who may either be benefactors of Hon Mudashiru Obasa or supporting him to cause a breach of the peace in Lagos, we will again put our lives on the line to defend democracy,” he said.
