Drivers affiliated with the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) in Lagos have vehemently opposed Bolt’s recent 50% fare reduction. The union claims that this drastic reduction exacerbates their financial struggles and has planned a protest to demand fairer treatment and improved working conditions in the ride-hailing industry.

According to the union’s spokesperson in Lagos, Steven Iwindoye, the persistent price reductions and unfair treatment of drivers by ride-hailing companies, including Bolt, Uber, Indrive, and Rida, have reached a critical point. Iwindoye emphasized the need for drivers to unite and take a stand against these practices.

In a press statement, Iwindoye said, “We call on all drivers, regardless of union affiliation, to participate in the upcoming protest. We cannot afford to have drivers undermining the effort by continuing to work and accept the unfair conditions. The protest’s success relies on the unity and solidarity of all drivers.”

Iwindoye also acknowledged that drivers themselves have sometimes hindered progress in the industry. “Some drivers have been hesitant to take a stand or have actively worked against the interests of their fellow drivers. This protest is an opportunity for drivers to put aside their differences and work towards a common goal,” he said.

As the union awaits the announcement of the protest date, Iwindoye urged drivers to express their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs. “Writing to Bolt and registering our displeasure with the 50% price slash is a crucial step. This will demonstrate our collective dissatisfaction and prepare the ground for the upcoming protest,” he explained.

Iwindoye concluded by urging drivers to unite and demand fair treatment from ride-hailing companies. “When the protest date is announced, we must stand together and use our collective power to bring about change. This may require drivers to take bold action and assert their rights. By doing so, we can create a better future for ourselves and the entire ride-hailing industry.

“We urge all Auaton members and drivers to unite and demand fair treatment from ride-hailing companies. Together, we can bring about the change we deserve
