The All Progressives Congress, APC, Lagos State chapter has officially begun reviewing complaints from its just-concluded local government primaries. The party’s Appeal Committee has confirmed that it has received more than 100 petitions from dissatisfied aspirants.
The state’s 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas were the targets of the petitions submitted by candidates for both chairmanship and councillorship seats. Citing anomalies and the purported imposition of candidates, a number of irate party members are contesting the validity of last Saturday’s primaries.
To handle the increasing volume of complaints, the APC leadership on Monday established an appeal tribunal led by Lawal Pedro, SAN, the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.
It was learned that 45 candidates for chairperson and 59 candidates for councillorship had submitted their applications to the panel.
Oluseye Oladejo, the Lagos APC’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident and stated that the party was dedicated to resolving all legitimate issues in accordance with internal democratic procedures.
The party has been given “45 chairmanship petitions and 59 councillorship petitions,” he stated.
“The committee will conclude its assignment this week,” the party’s image maker added.
The APC Appeal Committee had given disgruntled candidates until 12 p.m. on Tuesday to file their petitions against the results of the party’s most recent local government primaries.
An independent inquiry into the scandals surrounding the conduct of the APC primaries in Lagos has been demanded by the civil society organization United Action for Democracy, UAD.
“an example of how the local government autonomy and democracy are being rubbished by the powers that be, denying the working people ample chances to participate in true governance,” Ajayi said.
The group alleged a “subversion of democratic norms during the recently conducted APC local government primary elections in Lagos State.”
“In Agege, there have been massive protests over impositions. These actions not only threaten the sanctity of the democratic process but also set a dangerous precedent for future elections, including the 2027 general election.”
Ajayi issued a warning that the incident might have an impact on the 2027 elections “and further alienate Nigerians from democratic participation.”
He added, “We stand firm in our resolve to expose, challenge, and resist all forms of anti-democratic manipulation. We call on all lovers of democracy, within and outside Nigeria, to join us in the struggle.”
