In order to prosecute 18 drivers who were recently discovered driving outside the law, the Lagos State Government has mandated that they undergo obligatory psychological assessments.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, issued the edict as part of a revised enforcement strategy meant to reduce risky driving behaviors and instill discipline in drivers.
LASTMA reported that the impacted drivers were taken into custody for what it called “reckless and deliberate violations” of the law, which is also known as one-way driving. They will now undergo mental health evaluations to ascertain their psychological suitability for driving in addition to going to trial.
LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki gave an explanation of the reasoning behind the action, stating that the state government’s choice was consistent with global best practices in safety psychology and traffic management.
“The enforcement of psychiatric assessments is not intended to stigmatise or punish. Rather, it is a necessary intervention designed to protect the general motoring public from individuals who exhibit reckless disregard for human life and lawful order,” Bakare-Oki said.
According to the agency, one-way driving is still quite common in Lagos despite numerous programs to promote safe driving and road usage. This leads to accidents, heavy traffic, and damage to public infrastructure.
Bakare-Oki emphasized that the new regulation is intended to change behavior and discourage others from committing the same offenses.
“This initiative goes beyond traffic enforcement. It reflects the state’s vision to safeguard lives, promote responsible motoring, and maintain order on our roads,” he added.
