Two individuals have been arrested by the Lagos State Taskforce for allegedly trafficking illegal substances throughout the city on commercial motorcycles, commonly called Okada.
Colorado, Indian hemp, and other drugs were allegedly transported by the suspects, who were identified as 40-year-old Soji Inawole and the now fugitive Mufu Shobo.
During the operation, officers found a pair of scissors, a stockpile of narcotics, and other illegal things hidden inside a school bag.
As part of the taskforce’s continuous effort to eradicate criminal activity in the state, the arrests were made during a coordinated enforcement exercise along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Ijaiye Bus Stop, and Agbado Railway Station Road.
According to CSP Adetayo Akerele, the chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, the operation is a component of a larger plan to restore public order and enforce the state’s zero-tolerance policy against criminal activity.
“This operation reflects our zero-tolerance policy against illegal activities that compromise the security of our communities. The suspects will face the full weight of the law as investigations continue,” Akerele said in a statement released by the taskforce.
Subsequent investigations revealed that a number of Okada riders were collaborating with drug dealers to transfer drugs between brothels and other locations in Lagos that had been identified as hotspots.
Several motorcycles involved in the illegal trade were seized during the enforcement operation for violating traffic laws and supporting illegal activity.
In addition to stressing the value of public awareness, CSP Adetayo Akerele encouraged locals to get involved in the taskforce’s “See Something, Say Something” campaign.
“We call on all Lagosians to support our efforts. Community vigilance is crucial in helping us maintain a safe and secure environment,” he said.
While attempts are underway to find and capture the fugitive suspect, Soji Inawole, the captured suspect, has been charged in court.
