Former Real Madrid defender Rafael Alkorta has cautioned Vinicius Jr to tread carefully in his ongoing contract discussions with club president Florentino Perez.
Alkorta drew comparisons to the situation involving Sergio Ramos, warning that if Vinicius isn’t strategic, he could face a similar fate. Ramos had his contract withdrawn by the club in 2023, despite his legendary status at the Santiago Bernabeu.
He also pointed out that Vinicius has not been the same player since being moved from his usual left-wing position to a more central role a tactical shift made by then-manager Carlo Ancelotti to accommodate Kylian Mbappe.
According to Alkorta, the Brazilian is taking a major risk in how he’s approaching his contract renewal.
He said (via Madrid Universal): “Trying to squeeze Florentino Perez can go wrong. Let’s remember what happened with Ramos.”
Alkorta added that fighting over negotiations with Perez is ‘poisonous.’
“These fights are poisonous. Florentino is affectionate, but he does not hesitate to make tough decisions.
“Since they took him off the left wing, I haven’t seen him well. Playing with Mbappe has cost him,” he said.
The Brazilian winger’s current deal expires in 2027 and there have been talks over a new deal for the last few months now.
