The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, revealed that out of over 50,000 candidates who applied to study at the institution through the 2024 UTME, only 12,590 (representing 25.2%) secured admission. This announcement was made during the university’s matriculation ceremony held at the Ojo campus on Tuesday.
Olatunji-Bello urged the newly admitted students to consider themselves fortunate to be among the selected few. “As young men and women striving for a brighter future, you are expected to abide by the rules and regulations of the university and stay dedicated to your studies,” she said.
The vice-chancellor reassured the students that their welfare and safety remain a top priority for the school management, which is committed to providing a conducive learning environment. However, she cautioned them against engaging in vices that could jeopardise their future.
Olatunji-Bello reminded the students that LASU currently ranks 9th best among 298 universities in Nigeria and advised them to uphold high academic and moral standards. “Be regular in lectures, complete all assignments, avoid indecent dressing, choose your friends wisely, and shun cultism, examination malpractice, hooliganism, and other social vices that could put your future at risk,” she warned.
The vice-chancellor emphasised that LASU maintains zero tolerance for misconduct, including sexual and gender-based violence, and urged students to speak out if they experience harassment or assault. “We want you to graduate on time and make a positive impact in your chosen fields, not just in Nigeria but on a global scale. I wish you all success,” she concluded.
