President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s team is reportedly making a concerted effort to stop important members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), especially those from the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc, from switching to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as the 2027 presidential election approaches.
According to a leaked memo, President Tinubu is thinking of bringing in Senator Tanko Al-Makura, the former governor of Nasarawa State and a personal friend of former President Muhammadu Buhari, to persuade the CPC caucus to stay in the APC. According to reports, Al-Makura is being offered a possible position as national chairman of the APC in an attempt to get Buhari to step in and encourage his supporters to stick with the party.
Al-Makura has scheduled a news conference for Monday, according to Vanguard, when he is anticipated to make an announcement regarding Buhari’s purported backing for maintaining his political base within the APC.
A number of high-profile individuals, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa, are reportedly considering other political platforms in advance of the 2027 election. This development coincides with growing concerns within the ruling party. Many of them attribute their unhappiness to their displeasure with Tinubu’s leadership.
Concerns regarding the APC’s unity and future in the run-up to the next election cycle have been raised by the leaked letter, which has shown the party’s widening internal divides.
In an attempt to engage former President Buhari, the Progressive Governors’ Forum, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, and the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) have intensified their efforts.
Buhari was visited in Kaduna just last week by a group of APC governors who urged him to step in and stop more defections. The delegation was led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who also serves as the chair of the Progressive Governors’ Forum.
Notably, Nasir El-Rufai has openly asserted that Buhari has given him permission to quit the APC. With numerous defections already taking place in Buhari’s home state of Katsina, it is also believed that a number of former ministers from his cabinet are completing plans to join the SDP in big numbers.
Buhari met with NWC members and APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje just few hours after opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, El-Rufai, Tambuwal, and former Minister Isa Pantami—held talks with the former president.
Rumors of an upcoming wave of defections are fueled by the CPC bloc’s alleged disillusionment with the Tinubu administration, which includes important figures like former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Pantami, and former Minister of State for Education Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba.
A significant number of defections from this powerful group might seriously harm the APC’s chances in the 2027 election, making matters more difficult for the party and raising questions about its future political hegemony.
