Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has delivered a strong message to Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen, instructing them to promptly restore peace in conflict-prone communities or risk being removed from office.

This directive comes in response to a resurgence of communal violence in several locations across the state, especially in Ikom and Obubra LGAs, where deadly clashes between neighboring groups have continued.

Represented by his deputy, Dr. Peter Odey, during a peace and security forum held in Calabar, Governor Otu made it clear that his government would not condone unrest or disobedience to official orders aimed at achieving stability.

The gathering brought together community leaders and key stakeholders from the areas affected by ongoing disputes, including tensions between the Ekukunela and Alesi communities in Ikom LGA, as well as conflicts involving the Odonget, Ochon, and Isabang communities in Obubra LGA.

To quickly reduce hostilities, the state government announced a halt to all activities on contested lands until proper boundary lines are confirmed.

“All parties must cease any form of activity on the disputed lands until the state concludes its boundary verification process,” the governor directed.

Governor Otu further instructed those involved in the disputes to provide all relevant documentation concerning the land issues to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, who now heads a newly formed Peace Committee.

At the meeting, an eight-member Peace Committee was officially launched. Their mandate is to uncover the underlying causes of the hostilities and suggest long-term solutions for peaceful coexistence. They are to deliver a detailed report within two weeks.

In a statement issued by Fred Abua, Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, it was confirmed that relief materials would be distributed to those displaced by the conflicts.

“The committee is mandated to urgently brief the Deputy Governor on interim palliative measures for displaced persons and propose long-term peace-building strategies,” the statement said.

A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, August 13, 2025, to monitor the implementation of the resolutions, review the committee’s progress, and tackle any new developments.

Governor Otu emphasized that LGA chairmen in the affected areas must carry out the agreed measures fully or face sanctions, including potential suspension from their roles.
