Dr. Barry Johnson, who serves as the Deputy National Youth Leader of the Abure faction of the Labour Party, has condemned recent court rulings impacting the party. He characterized the judiciary as being in a state of “disarray” and raised doubts about the trajectory of democracy in Nigeria.

During an interview with Trust TV, Johnson addressed worries regarding the Labour Party’s internal divisions after its historic performance in the 2023 general elections.

Johnson emphasized that the group led by Abure continues to be the party’s legitimate leadership.

He claims that the faction he represents is acknowledged by the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He claimed that certain court decisions regarding the party had weakened internal party structures.

“The court of this country should be questioned. Decisions of the court are wrong,” Johnson stated, voicing worries about what he characterized as the potential effects of such rulings on Nigeria’s democratic future.

He also raised doubts about whether the current political climate embodies the type of democracy Nigerians want to bequeath to the next generation, cautioning against what he described as a system characterized by “criminality” and excessive judicial backing.
