Following Donald Trump’s return to the White House, Emmanuel Macron called on his European partners to “wake up.”
The French president urged his neighbours to increase their defence spending in order to lessen their dependency on the United States for security during an address to the French military yesterday, January 20.
Speaking at the Army Digital and Cyber Support Command in western France, Mr. Macron alluded to anticipated shifts in Washington’s foreign policy, particularly with reference to the conflict in Ukraine, calling it a “strategic wake-up call for Europe.”
In the event that our American friend removes its warships from the Mediterranean, what will we do in Europe tomorrow? In the event that they move their combat aircraft from the Atlantic to the Pacific? He enquired.
Mr. Trump has expressed his desire to shift more of the financial burden on Europe and has previously criticised the cost of the military aid packages to Ukraine for US taxpayers.
He has expressed optimism that a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine could be concluded within six months and pledged to put an immediate stop to the fighting.
According to Macron, France and Europe need to adjust to new interests and threats.
He said: “Who would have thought a year ago that Greenland would be at the centre of political and strategic debates? That’s the way it is.”
He added that giving Ukraine long-term support is essential to giving Kyiv a competitive edge in any peace talks.
According to Mr. Macron, Europe must “play its full role” in the process and provide Ukraine with “guarantees” that the war would not recur on its territory once hostilities have ended.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, he spoke with Macron last week about the potential deployment of Western forces in Ukraine to protect any peace agreement that would put an end to the country’s nearly three-year conflict with Russia.
“As one of these guarantees, we discussed the French initiative to deploy military contingents in Ukraine,” Mr Zelensky said.
There are risks associated with the possibility of sending European troops to Ukraine as peacekeepers.
Such a step could force European nations to face Moscow directly and might not prevent Russia from attacking Ukraine in the future, which is what Ukrainian leaders fear. This might then draw Britain and other NATO members into a war.
