Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State, has voiced worry that it has been two weeks since the President enacted the 2026 Electoral Act and he still has not received an official version of the law.

While making a speech at the Obafemi Awolowo Lecture 2026 at Efunyela Hall in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, the governor brought up the issue on Friday.

Makinde expressed regret that although the new law had been publicly debated, the document had not been easily accessible for detailed public examination.

During a lecture held in tribute to the late nationalist leader Obafemi Awolowo, Makinde emphasized that true federalism must be agreed upon by Nigeria’s political elite for the country’s long-term development.

He believes that the country can achieve its aim of sustainable growth and stability only through a federal structure that embodies the principles Awolowo has long championed.

Nigerians were also encouraged by the governor to tackle the challenges facing the country with resolve. He pointed out that the collective decisions of leaders and citizens alike have played a major role in shaping Nigeria’s current situation.

Makinde reiterated his backing for a dynamic multi-party democracy, emphasizing that democracy thrives when opposition parties can operate freely and meaningfully contribute to national development.

He also expressed concern about the worsening security situation nationwide, cautioning that if the issue is not tackled effectively, Nigeria could slide into a long-term instability akin to that of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“We should stop thinking about the next election; we should think about the next generation,” the governor said.

Makinde further noted that his government in Oyo State has been inspired by Awolowo’s governance philosophy, which stresses the importance of evidence-based decision-making informed by science, logic, and trustworthy data, especially in critical areas like education, healthcare, and economic development.
