Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has clarified the reason behind the visit by the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following the Occupy INEC protest.
Makinde explained that the visit was meant to express solidarity with the ADC’s factional leadership amid ongoing political developments.
The governor spoke to journalists after a meeting between ADC leaders and the factional PDP leadership, which extended late into the night.
According to Makinde, the visit was prompted by recent political events, including court actions and protests.
“We came here to visit the leadership of ADC, we are on a solidarity visit and we have seen what has been happening within the political space, the court and protest, so we came to show solidarity and to commit to a clean democratic space in our country,” he said.
The David Mark-led ADC faction and Turaki’s faction gathered at Mark’s residence in Apo, Abuja, for a high-level opposition meeting.
Among those present at the strategic gathering were former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, alongside former governors Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, Peter Obi, and Babangida Aliyu.
Also in attendance were former Information Minister Jerry Gana and PDP National Secretary Taofeek Arapaja.
The meeting took place just hours after the ADC staged a protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, signaling growing political tensions and coordinated opposition actions.
