In a recent viral video, a man was seen pouring an alcoholic beverage—possibly beer—down the mouth of a common carp fish. The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) in South Africa announced that it would file criminal charges against the individual.
The man who uploaded the video to TikTok under the handle Lethabo_Sebapo has subsequently been tracked, according to the NSPCA.
According to NSPCA spokeswoman Jacques Peacock, “(He) has been tracked, contacted, and the compilation of a docket is in its final stages.”
The man can be seen grinning and pouring beer into the mouth of a fish while holding it in one hand in the video.
People can be heard laughing in the background as he performs, and the man seems amused the entire time.
According to Peacock, the individual acknowledged committing the deed and claimed that his sole motivation was amusement.
The man will be charged with a crime under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962, he stated.
“Since the rise of social media platforms like TikTok, the NSPCA has seen an alarming increase in videos depicting animal cruelty. Much of our Inspectors’ time and resources are now taken up by tracking and investigating the sources of such videos.
“The NSPCA is heartened by the widespread condemnation of the man’s actions, which reflects the compassion many South Africans feel for animals – including fish, who are often overlooked in their capacity for sentience and suffering.
“We hope this prosecution will serve as a strong deterrent, discouraging individuals not only from publishing acts of animal cruelty as a form of entertainment but also from committing them in the first place,” added Peacock.
