A home conflict turned into a terrifying act of violence inside a Shoprite grocery store on Sunday afternoon, traumatizing customers at the normally busy Namakgale Shopping Complex in Phalaborwa.

Police claim that a 45-year-old man shot and killed his 40-year-old wife, wounded a store manager who attempted to stop him, and then turned the gun on himself in front of shocked patrons. Shortly after noon, the tragedy happened, transforming a normal shopping excursion into a terrifying and chaotic sight.

Following the fatal gunshot, officers in the Mopani District have opened files of two counts of murder and one of attempted murder, according to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect confronted his wife inside the store before drawing a firearm and firing multiple shots. When the manager attempted to de-escalate the situation he too was shot and sustained serious injuries. The suspect then turned the weapon on himself” Ledwaba said.

Both the wife and her husband were pronounced dead at the site despite the fact that emergency personnel raced to the scene. After being taken to a local hospital, the injured manager is still in critical but stable condition.

Witnesses reported seeing panicked consumers running for their lives. I witnessed people shouting and sprinting in the direction of the exits after hearing three big booms. One traumatized customer stated, “It was like something out of a movie.” Others said they huddled behind bookcases and in storage rooms when shooting broke out.

The startling event has rekindled discussions about the availability of firearms in domestic conflicts and gender-based violence (GBV).

MEC for Community Safety in Limpopo Florence Radzilani denounced the incident, calling it a pointless demonstration of violent and toxic masculinity that takes innocent lives from families, communities, and workplaces.

Employees and clients impacted by the experience have access to counseling services. In a brief statement, Shoprite Holdings offered assistance for their injured colleague and condolences to the victim’s family.

To ascertain the complete facts surrounding the tragedy, including whether past threats or protection orders had been reported, police investigations are still ongoing.

The shopping aisles of Shoprite will now always evoke the eerie recollection of a Sunday that ended in violence and grief for the people of Namakgale.
