Mr. Okezie Onyema Onyendu, a commercial motorcyclist from Obuoro community in Ikwuano LGA of Abia State, died from wounds he received after being attacked by unidentified individuals in Amawom village.

A month after being purportedly exiled by some members of his community due to the land sharing formula, Okezie was attacked on March 7 and passed away at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Umuahia on March 10, 2025.

One of the victim’s ears was allegedly severed during the assault, and the unidentified assailants are also accused of stealing his commercial motorcycle, cell phone, and the money he earned from his transport service on March 7.

The widow to the late Okezie Onyema Onyendu, Mrs Ogechi Okezie told reporters at the Police Area Command in Umuahia, where the murder case was reported, on Friday that some Obuoro villagers plotted to expel her husband from the community for refusing to cede his property to a distant relative.

“They arrested my husband, banished him from Obuoro Ibere in February 2024, I took him to my own village in Itunta but they still came there and told us to leave that place.

“My husband sued them to a court and the High Court was supposed to sit on March 12 but my husband disappeared on March 7 only for his unconscious body to be discovered with an ear cut off,” she disclosed.

In addition, she said that a chief in the Obuoro Ibere village and other individuals had threatened to deal with her late husband. She also claimed that people responsible for her husband’s death were threatening to kill her in order to hide the crime.

DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Abia State Police Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed when contacted on Friday that the case had been reported to the Police Area Command in Umuahia and that investigations had begun.
