A National Police Reservist shot his ex-wife dead a day after their divorce, turning a tragic Lamu love tale into a deadly one that shocked the sleepy village of Kiunga.

On Monday morning, the victim—a refugee who had fled turmoil in 2011 and rebuilt her life in Kenya—was shot and killed by her ex-husband. According to Islamic custom, the two had finalized their divorce the day before.

According to reports, the 36-year-old suspect, who is from Kiunga, had accused his ex-wife of adultery. Less than twenty-four hours after the separation, he allegedly broke into her house, shot her dead, and then turned the gun on himself, according to the authorities.

After being sent to a hospital in Mombasa for specialized care, the woman’s close friend, who was also shot during the assault, is now in critical condition.

The couple was raising a small girl and had been together for five years. According to reports, tensions had increased throughout her second pregnancy, which finally resulted in their split.

The attack has been denounced by local authorities and refugee advocates, who have called for more robust support networks for families in need. In Lamu, humanitarian teams have organized to offer impacted refugees legal aid as well as psychosocial support.

Authorities also disclosed that the injured friend’s expired alien ID caused delays in medical care, a problem that has prompted new calls for changes to healthcare access and refugee documentation.

In the wake of yet another preventable tragedy, a public awareness campaign designed to inform refugee families of their rights and encourage amicable means of settling marital disputes is about to begin.
