A man was captured on CCTV executing a well-planned theft at a cosmetic shop after posing as a legitimate customer.
The incident, which has sparked significant reactions online, shows how the suspect distracted the attendant before swiftly running away with her phone.
The footage has since gone viral on various social media platforms.
The theft occurred on April 6 at approximately 6:21 p.m. when the suspect entered the shop, pretending to be a buyer. He initially asked for two bundles of black thread, then deliberately requested another item placed on a high shelf, setting the stage for his scheme. The attendant engaged him normally, unaware of the impending theft.
According to the video, the man took advantage of the moment when the attendant climbed a stool to reach the upper shelf.
With her back turned, he reached through the shop’s grills and quickly snatched her phone from the counter before walking away as if nothing had happened.
It was only when a new customer entered the shop that the attendant realized something was amiss. She soon discovered that her phone was missing and immediately questioned whether the earlier customer had taken it. By then, the suspect had already vanished from the scene.
The CCTV clip has sparked mixed reactions from Kenyans online, with many discussing ways to prevent such incidents.
Some suggested improving shop layouts and surveillance, while others advised business owners to stay more vigilant when handling multiple customers at once.
Security experts have warned traders to install cameras, avoid obstructed counters, and secure valuable items.
Authorities have also urged shop owners to remain alert, particularly during busy hours when petty thieves commonly use distraction tactics.
Police have encouraged victims of similar incidents to report immediately and provide CCTV footage to aid investigations and help identify suspects quickly.
