Marquette University in Milwaukee has announced a significant gift of $7.5 million from the Richard L. Boland Love for Life Foundation, also known as the Betty and Dick Boland Foundation. The generous donation will be used to endow the Institute for Natural Family Planning in the College of Nursing, which has been renamed the Boland Institute in recognition of the foundation’s support.

The Boland Institute conducts research and provides a natural family planning (NFP) teacher training program for practicing health professionals. The Marquette Method of NFP (MM NFP) fertility charting system uses an algorithm to help women and couples identify their fertile window by interpreting biological signs of fertility. This method is currently being taught by NFP teachers in several countries, including Canada, Australia, France, Mexico, Uganda, and the United States.
In addition to its research and training programs, the institute is also developing a fertility app system. This innovative tool will provide users with a convenient and accessible way to track their fertility and make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
The $7.5 million gift from the Boland Foundation follows a previous donation made in May 2024. The earlier gift supported a collaborative research project between Marquette University, Masaka Diocese, Kampala Archdiocese, and the Uganda Catholic Medical Bureau. The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Marquette Method of NFP as a method to avoid pregnancy and determine satisfaction and ease of use among couples in Uganda.
Marquette University President Kimo Ah Yun expressed his gratitude for the Boland Foundation’s generous support, stating, “This gift is a wonderful reflection of our collaboration between Marquette University and the global Catholic Church.” He continued, “We are grateful to the Boland Foundation for ensuring our Natural Family Planning Institute continues its impactful work far into the future.”
