President Bola Tinubu’s two years in office have been characterized as a huge disappointment by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The party made its remarks in a statement issued by Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary, in Abuja on Wednesday.
The opposition party branded the last two years as nightmarish, saying that Nigerians had gone through hell under the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress, APC, government.
According to the PDP, Tinubu must immediately address the issue of insecurity, undo all policies that are stifling the economy, and curb his administration’s widespread corruption, greed, unchecked wastefulness, careless mismanagement of resources, arrogance in failure, and totalitarian tendencies. His administration has proven to be anti-people and insensitive to the suffering of Nigerians.
“As a Party, we restate our position that any government that cares for the wellbeing of the people and has an idea of macro-economic policy management would have reckoned that an abrupt increase in petrol price and devaluation of the Naira as executed by the Tinubu administration would cripple the productive sector, inflame high costs, crash millions of businesses, trigger mass job loss, escalate poverty, hunger, hardship, insecurity and hopelessness across the country.
“With the Naira which exchanged for N167 to a US Dollar under the PDP administration now exchanging for over N1,600; petrol which sold for N87 per liter under the PDP now selling for over N1,000 per liter; with nearly 40% inflation rate, over 42% youth unemployment rate, acute food shortage, frightening rise in criminality and social vices, the situation in Nigeria has become so unbearable that many talented citizens are now fleeing the country with others resorting to suicide to escape the agonies inflicted by the APC government.
“More troubling is that from May 2023 when President Tinubu took office, more than 600,000 Nigerians have been killed by terrorists and bandits who are emboldened by the APC administration’s apparent negligence and failure to ensure the safety and security of the nation and her citizens,” the statement said.
PDP added that international corporations are fleeing Nigeria in large numbers to neighboring nations whose governments are aware of their obligations because to the heightened insecurity, comatose infrastructure and economic uncertainty over the past two years.
The opposition party claims that the Tinubu administration ignored the PDP and other well-meaning Nigerians and instead pursued a series of taxes, extortion charges, and reckless foreign borrowing totaling N182.91 trillion (including the most recent request for an additional $24.14 billion, or N38.24 trillion), without any corresponding development project or program that would benefit the people.
The APC is obsessed with making Nigeria a one-party state and frittering the country’s limited resources for the purchase of aircraft, extravagant yachts, luxury houses, costly international travel, and a lavish lifestyle, according to the PDP, while Nigerians suffer.
The PDP asked Tinubu to acknowledge the severe suffering of Nigerians and to refrain from the APC’s custom of using rhetoric and exaggerated performance claims that are out of step with the country’s actual situation.
The party charged the president with using the final two years of his term to improve his reputation by tackling the insecurity problem, reviewing all restrictive policies to lower the cost of petroleum products, and strengthening the value of the Naira while appointing more capable individuals to oversee the country’s economy.
