The unfortunate demise of Stella Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former First Lady, continues to be one of the most talked-about instances of medical negligence involving a well-known African figure receiving treatment overseas.

New information from court proceedings and prior investigations reveals how a standard cosmetic procedure in Spain resulted in deadly complications and a criminal conviction.

Routine operation became fatal:

On October 23, 2005, Stella Obasanjo, spouse of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, passed away in Marbella, Spain, following an elective liposuction procedure at the Molding Clinic.

Initially, the procedure performed by Spanish plastic surgeon Antonio Mena was described as routine.

During the operation, though, difficulties arose when a cannula intended for fat removal was incorrectly placed in her abdominal cavity.
