The death of Ajibola Ibitayo, a second-year medical student, has been verified by the administration of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Ibitayo allegedly committed suicide after failing his exams, the college disclosed.
Ibitayo, a student in the Faculty of Dentistry, has been repeating Part Two and was obliged to do so once again following the release of the most recent results on Wednesday, according to a statement released on Thursday by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.
“The entire community of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has been thrown into mourning following the death of a Part Two student of the Faculty of Dentistry,” Olarewaju said.
“The student Ajibola Ibitayo, has a matriculation number DEN/2021/023. The results of his last semester examinations indicated he would need to repeat Part Two for another academic year,” he stated.
The statement claims that the deceased reportedly shot himself at his parents’ house in Ejigbo, Osun State, after repeating the same academic level during the previous session.
“The student, whose father is a medical doctor, took the step after learning of the examination outcome,” the statement read.
Professor Simeon Bamire, the university’s vice-chancellor, has expressed his profound sorrow over the occurrence and urged parents and guardians to teach their children that failures do not mean the end of life.
Bamire said, “Temporary setbacks in the pursuit of success are part of life and should not be seen as the end. Students must be encouraged to see failure as an opportunity to redirect their paths toward success and greater achievements.”
The OAU VC said the loss was a heavy one for the university and prayed for the student’s family, friends, and the entire campus community.
In order to help students deal with academic issues, the administration encouraged them to take advantage of the university’s support and counseling facilities.
In a statement, Adebayo Idris, the president of the Dentistry Students’ Association, also affirmed the development.
He said that Ajibola’s passing was a terrible loss and a reminder of the silent battles that many youth endure.
“This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face,” the statement read.
The group emphasized that mental health is just as vital as physical health and encouraged students to support one another and get professional assistance when needed.
In the meantime, a person with knowledge of the situation told ZINGTIE that, in contrast to what he had been told, the deceased’s results were actually positive.
According to the source, Ajibola received a call from a friend who said his results were poor.
The source claims that this may have played a role in his choice to commit himself.
“It is shocking because his results were good. His friend just told him otherwise,” the source said.
