Former U.S. international Megan Rapinoe has strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s executive order that effectively bans transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports at public institutions.

The 39-year-old described Trump’s order as both heartless and immoral.

In a recent interview with soccer magazine MUNDIAL, Rapinoe specifically addressed Trump’s assertion that the move was meant to protect female athletes from competing against trans individuals.

“Don’t claim it’s about women’s sports rights,” Rapinoe stated.

“That’s completely misleading,” she continued.

She also emphasized, “I think it’s just incredibly cruel. When you break it down, it’s simply cruel and immoral.”

“This isn’t a real issue, and no Executive Order will erase trans people from existence,” Rapinoe added.

Trump had signed executive orders that defined only two genders and issued one titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports.”
