It has emerged that Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, was the player who reportedly received the highest number of death threats during the 2026 World Cup.

The development was contained in a review by Spanish newspaper, Marca, of a large-scale American police report on security incidents recorded during the tournament.

The report detailed security threats handled by the FBI and the IPCC throughout the World Cup.

According to the report, a man threatened to attack the stadium during the group-stage encounter between Jordan and Argentina alongside two other individuals armed with homemade explosives and an AR-15 rifle.

Messi was reportedly identified as a specific target during the phone call, with the alleged intention being to kill the Argentine football star.

Ahead of Argentina’s match against Egypt, investigators also uncovered concerning messages posted online.

During the same fixture, security officials conducted a search of the stadium following reports that bombs had been concealed inside some bins.

After security personnel thoroughly searched the venue with sniffer dogs, the suspected threat was eventually determined to be a false alarm.
