Former Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Özil has stated that Vinícius Júnior, the club’s forward, is currently the best player in the world.

Özil made this assertion just days after former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger placed the Brazilian as the third-best player.

Özil, who played under Wenger at Arsenal before joining Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, was responding to a question about his choice for the top player at present.

Vinícius Júnior had believed he would win the Ballon d’Or last year, only for reports in the final moments to suggest that Manchester City midfielder Rodri was being favored instead.

He ended 2024 as the second-best player in the world, according to France Football.

The Brazilian has been in superb form this season, with many predicting he might take home the prestigious individual award this year.

“The best player at this moment? Vinícius Júnior,” he said via Madrid Xtra, as reported by Sportskeeda.

Legendary Arsenal manager Wenger had ranked Vinícius third among the best players in the world, placing him behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and his Real Madrid teammate Kylian Mbappé.

So far this season, Vinícius has netted 16 goals and provided 12 assists in 36 appearances across all competitions.
