Mother and Sister of Slain Terror kingpin Battujo, Sentenced to 40 Years In Prison

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday handed lengthy prison terms to two women arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) over terrorism-related offences.

The convicts, Safiya Salihu and Halima Abdullahi, are the mother and sister, respectively, of notorious terrorist commander Kachallah Ibrahim Battujo, who was killed by Nigerian security operatives on June 10, 2026, during an operation in a forest around Iluke in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa delivered the judgment after the two women admitted guilt to Counts 2, 4 and 5 of a five-count charge filed against them by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation.

The court, however, did not convict them on Counts 1 and 3, which related to receiving N490,300 allegedly generated from terrorism activities and accepting sponsorship for a religious pilgrimage funded through proceeds linked to terrorism.

During proceedings, Director of Public Prosecutions, Oyedepo Rotimi, SAN, requested that the two counts be withdrawn while urging the court to convict the defendants on the remaining charges.

According to Count 2, both women “aided and abetted the activities of Battujo, a known bandit kingpin, and passed information through telephone conversations to the said Battujo, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 26 of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.”

Apart from admitting guilt to Count 2, Battujo’s mother also pleaded guilty to Count 5, which accused her of withholding information concerning her son’s terrorist operations.

Similarly, the late terror leader’s sister admitted guilt to Count 4 in addition to Count 2. The charge accused her of concealing information regarding firearms illegally possessed by her brother, which she reportedly saw during a visit to his camp in the forest.

Although each count carries a prison term of 20 years, Justice Yilwa directed that the sentences run concurrently.

The court further ordered that both convicts undergo rehabilitation after serving their prison terms.
