Former Real Madrid star Marcelo has shared how former Los Blancos manager, Jose Mourinho, played a significant role in improving his game, particularly by teaching him to be more aggressive on the field.
According to the Brazilian left-back, Mourinho emphasized the importance of aggression in play, helping him develop his defensive skills. Marcelo revealed that, while he always sought to have the ball, Mourinho taught him to focus on winning the ball first.
In an interview with El Hormiguero, Marcelo reflected on the Portuguese tactician’s impact, saying, “Mourinho taught me to be more aggressive. He told me, ‘You don’t know how to defend. I’m going to teach you, and I’m going to make you the best.’”
Marcelo, who recently announced his retirement from football on February 6, spent 16 seasons at Real Madrid, becoming one of the greatest left-backs in football history. Under Mourinho’s management between 2010 and 2013, Marcelo was an integral part of the team, helping them secure the 2011 Copa del Rey and the 2012 La Liga title.
During his time at Real Madrid, Marcelo made 113 appearances under Mourinho, scoring 9 goals and providing 21 assists. In total, the Brazilian made 546 appearances for the club, scoring 38 goals and contributing 108 assists.
