Musk, Rubio clash in cabinet meeting

During a Cabinet meeting, a confrontation occurred between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and billionaire White House adviser Elon Musk, with President Donald Trump overseeing the ongoing staff cuts carried out by Rubio.

The tension reportedly arose when Trump addressed his Cabinet members, asserting that they, not Musk, had the final authority on staffing and policy decisions within their respective agencies.

According to the New York Times, Musk, tasked by Trump with reducing the federal bureaucracy, criticized Rubio for not firing any staff members and for resisting Musk’s push for extensive staff reductions.

In response, Rubio defended his actions, stating that over 1,500 employees at the State Department had opted for early retirement buyouts.

Sources suggest that Rubio sarcastically questioned whether Musk wanted him to rehire all those individuals just to later fire them again for the sake of appearance.

The meeting was convened amid growing concerns from agency leaders and White House officials, including chief of staff Susie Wiles, who had expressed frustration with Musk’s direct approach to staffing cuts.

The White House Office of Legislative Affairs has reportedly been overwhelmed with calls from discontented Republican lawmakers, some of whom have faced backlash from their constituents.

“No clash, I was there, you’re just a troublemaker. Elon gets along great with Marco and they’re both doing a fantastic job. Marco has done unbelievably as Secretary of State. And Elon is a unique guy and has done a fantastic job,” he told a reporter who asked about the report.
