“My father and my stepmother did this to me. They lit the gas, placed a knife on the flame, and placed the hot knife on parts of my body.”

From a hospital bed where she is currently receiving therapy, 14-year-old Favour Nwankwo, a Basic Six student at Destined Success Academy in Oko, Anambra State, told the heartbreaking story of abuse and neglect.

As gathered, the incident took place on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at her home.

She forced herself to go to school that day in spite of the unbearable pain that felt like it would kill her.

When a watchful class teacher saw Favour writhing in agony, she promptly informed the headmistress of the school.

The extent of the burns the student received on six delicate body parts—her back, arms, lap, and buttocks—was demonstrated in a heartbreaking video that went viral. Her panties were stained by the blood that seeped from the wounds.

One of the school’s teachers denounced the parents’ behaviour, calling it “wicked” and “inhumane.”

She said, “It’s unbearable to think that parents could inflict such pain on their own child. Her stepmother came to the school and requested to take her to the hospital for treatment. But we prevented her from taking Favour away because we suspected they might try to cover up the incident.” We have reported the incident to the Ministry of Education and relevant civil society organisations.”

But Mrs. Oluchi Nwankwo, Favour’s stepmother, denied any role in the assault, saying her husband was the one responsible.
