Nigerian music star Divine Ikubor, better known as Rema, has opened up about the artistic intention behind his image transformation leading up to the release of his second studio album, HEIS, last year.

In the buildup to the project, Rema shifted away from his familiar branding letting go of his signature mask and teddy bear and adopted a new look featuring tattoos, darker fashion tones, and smoking. His music and overall visual style also took on a different tone.

Reflecting on the album’s one-year anniversary on Thursday, Rema clarified that his new image, including the smoking, was purely a form of creative expression and not a departure from his true self, as many had speculated.

He shared that the album’s artwork drew inspiration from the anime character Itachi Uchiha from the Japanese series Naruto.

Taking to his X page, he wrote:

“On his X handle, he wrote, “HEIS, the Anniversary.

“I expressed a lot of surface level reasons why I released this project over a course of interviews when it came out but, here are few “SYMBOLIC” details that wrap around the ENERGY of the project I kept for myself but now, I’d like to share.

“Consider this an Author’s note;

“The cover was inspired by Itachi in Naruto. The Truth masked as illusion, Love buried under what y’all thought was betrayal ( change of sound, smoking , looks, aesthetics & choice of color ).”

Similarly, in the previous year, rapper Shallipopi also sparked conversation when he revealed that despite being seen holding cigarettes in photos and videos, he doesn’t actually smoke—claiming it was all part of his artistic presentation.
