N100m: EFCC reveals next plan against Emefiele

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court’s decision to award N100 million in damages against the EFCC in favour of Godwin Emefiele, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), angered the organisation on Monday.

Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), revealed that the commission would file an instant appeal of the ruling in a statement made in Abuja.

According to Oyewale, the EFCC was fined on Monday by Justice O.A. Adeniyi for imprisoning Emefiele during his investigation, which was against his right to liberty.

“The decision failed to take cognizance of the fact that the former CBN boss was held with a valid order of court. Consequently, the Commission will approach the Court of Appeal to set it aside,” he said.

Remember that Adeniyi had previously granted the suspended Emefiele N100 million in damages as compensation for rights abuses committed by the Federal Government and EFCC.

In order to protect his fundamental rights to life, personal liberty, a fair trial, and freedom of movement, Emefiele has sued the Federal Government, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the EFCC.
