Idris Okuneye, a crossdresser, pleaded guilty in a Lagos court on Friday to a four-count charge of money laundering and abuse of the currency brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC.
The self-described transgender person, also known as Bobrisky, was reportedly arrested in Lagos on Wednesday night for allegedly handling naira notes improperly, according to ZZINGTIE.
For allegedly spray-painting and destroying currency notes at an event, the crossdresser was taken into custody.
He was also arraigned on a six-count charge, but after a conversation between the parties, two of the counts were dismissed.
Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, is a controversial crossdresser who was found guilty of misusing Naira by the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Bobrisky was arraigned on four counts of naira abuse brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, according to ZINGTIE.
Justice Abimbola Awogboro found him guilty after reviewing the case’s facts.
Prior to his conviction, Bobrisky pleaded with the court that he was unaware of the law on the abuse of Naira.
The first four counts involved Naira abuse; however, the crossdresser pleaded guilty.
He claimed to be an influencer with more than five million followers on social media.
The judge then informed him that ignorance of the law was not an excuse.
“I know, My Lord. My Lord, I wish that you could give me a second chance to use my platform to inform and educate my followers about spraying money.
“I would do a video on my page and I will educate people about spraying money.
“I will not repeat it again. I regret my actions,” he said.
With the conviction, Bobrisky could either serve six months in prison, pay a fine of N50,000 or do both.
Section 21 (1) of the CBN Act 2007 states that “a person who tampers with a coin or note issued by the Bank is guilty of an offence and shall on conviction be liable for imprisonment for a term not less than six months or to a fine not less than N50,000 or to both such fine and imprisonment.
