Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, has criticized the Nigerian Senate for preventing Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, from resuming her duties.

Amadi shared his views during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, where he addressed questions concerning the matter.

He condemned the Senate’s decision, labeling it as a misuse of legislative authority.

According to him, the Clerk of the National Assembly lacks the legal standing to prolong a senator’s suspension, as the clerk is not an elected member of the legislature.

Amadi further expressed disappointment over what he sees as a recurring issue lawmakers setting procedural rules but consistently failing to adhere to them.

“This is a case of overreach. An abuse of privileges of the senators themselves.

“The National Assembly has the power to suspend its member, but that suspension has to be within the proceeding of that House.

“It’s totally wrong that parliament process awaits judicial determination. The parliament had immunity and self-control. In fact, judicial interventions do not stop parliamentary proceedings,” he said.
