The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has accredited and re-accredited 47 academic programmes, including backlogged applications dating as far back as 2009, at Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja (Kogi Poly).
The Rector, Professor Salisu Ogbo, disclosed this during a Stewardship Forum organised by the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kogi State Chapter.
Highlighting one of the key milestones, Ogbo announced the establishment and accreditation of the School of Agricultural Technology, Itakpe, which now runs four programmes: Agricultural Technology, Animal Health and Production Technology, Agricultural and Bio-Environmental Technology, and Horticulture and Landscape Technology.
Speaking on academic reforms, the Rector said:
“We constituted the Academic Board Central Results Verification Committee, leading to proper scrutiny of results, cost effectiveness, and reduction in time wastage at the Academic Board meetings. We also introduced Computer-Based Tests (CBT) for the conduct of General Studies and other examinations with large classes, which has curbed unethical practices and ensured prompt release of results.”
On safeguarding academic integrity, he noted that new measures had been introduced to eliminate falsification of records.
“To avoid fake results, we have provided a new statement of result template with additional security features against falsification. We also introduced e-results computation and display of semester results online for students.”
Ogbo further highlighted improvements in academic resources and programme expansion.
“We have furnished the Polytechnic Library with adequate up-to-date textbooks, journals, and e-library components. We have also established and successfully undergone resource inspection for Mass Communication, Clothing and Textile Technology, and Printing Technology programmes at the ND level.”
The Rector also revealed new collaborations with national agencies and universities.
“We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) for collaboration, smooth take-off, and eventual accreditation of the Department of Mechatronics Engineering Technology at the School of Engineering, Itakpe.”
“We have also entered into academic linkage and affiliation with the Federal University Lokoja for Top–Up Degree and Regular Undergraduate Programmes leading to the award of first degrees in various disciplines. This includes staff and student exchanges, facility sharing, and collaborative programmes.”
Ogbo concluded that these reforms and accreditations would reposition the Polytechnic as a centre of excellence in technical and vocational education, while enhancing opportunities for students and staff alike.
