Over 100 youth leaders from Owerri North Local Government Area in Imo State have been trained by the Community Life Project, a non-governmental organization, to address family and community problems. The training, themed “The Role of Male Youth Leaders in Building Just and Healthy Families and Communities,” was held at St. Michael Catholic Church Umuorii in Obibi Uratta.

Programme Manager Mrs. Celine Osukwu emphasized that the training aimed to raise awareness about cultural norms and behaviors that can trigger health challenges. “There are certain behaviors, beliefs, and norms that stereotype families and societies. Some of these things are done unconsciously without the youth knowing about it. They also have a role in building a healthy family where everybody is treated equally.
Osukwu highlighted examples of societal pressures on youths, such as expectations to get married without considering their mental and financial capacity. “For instance, there is no law that says only a male child should fend for their families or only female child should do the house chores, but this has been a belief in the society which has affected our youths by mounting pressures on them.”
Chief Ugochukwu Ajero, a participant from Umuoba Uratta, commended the organizers for the training. “We appreciate the Community Life Project for championing awareness campaigns to mitigate problems youths encounter in their various homes and communities.” He appealed for further regularization of such programs to tackle social vices among youths
