According to the Niger State Police Command, the owner of the dynamites that detonated in the Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State, killing one person and injuring six, is still at large.
The incident occurred on Monday at Sabon-pegi, Mashegu LG, when dynamites that one Yushau had stored in a residential neighbourhood for a rumoured mining operation exploded.
Shawulu Danmamman, the State Commissioner of Police, clarified that on January 26, 2025, at around 7:30 am, some suspected dynamites that had allegedly been stored in a residential area by one Yushau for alleged mining operations exploded at Sabon-Pegi, Mashegu LGA.
Danmamman claims that one Fatima Sadauki tragically died as a result of the explosion, and that six other people were injured and taken to general hospital Kainji for medical attention.
He added, “The incident affected about 12 houses in the area, and an investigation into the incident has commenced.
“The EOD-CBRN unit of the Command has been dispatched to the scene for assessment, but the said Yushau is currently at large.
“However, normalcy has been restored in the area while monitoring continues.”
If the community had identified the dynamite’s owner and told the police what kind of business he does, the police would have arrested the suspect, evacuated the items, and prevented the incident, the police boss said, adding that the command expected more from the community by providing intelligence to the police.
