According to Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential contender, Nigeria is short of courageous people who are able to speak truth to power.

During the Alaigbo Development Foundation’s tenth anniversary celebration on Saturday in Umuahia, Abia State, Obi made this declaration.

He lamented the large number of sycophants in the nation who tell authorities what they want to hear.

The former governor of Anambra State urged public officials to use public funds for the people, recalling how he wisely handled them while in office.

He also tasked them with developing policies that prioritise individuals and implementing initiatives that advance public harmony.

Obi attributed Nigeria’s problems to public officials’ greed and never-ending pursuit of wealth.

Thus, he invited Nigerians to speak truth to power and stop hero-worshipping.

“What we lack in Nigeria is people who can tell you you are wrong when you are. Leaders are bound to listen to the people because the people put them in the office.

“Leaders must use public money for public purpose. When I was in public office, I used public money for public purpose. I made sure I used the people’s money for them.

“I did not spend any Kobo for personal gain. I didn’t take it, [I didn’t] owe pensions or gratuities. I did not owe any contractors. Now in private life, I can do whatever I like with my money,” Obi said.
