Victor Ikem, founder of Drinks Revolution Limited and a leading expert in Nigeria’s wine and spirits industry, has identified Nigeria as a key market for US and California wine exporters. “Nigeria is a dynamic and rapidly expanding market with a growing consumer base that is increasingly receptive to international wine brands,” Ikem said. “With the right strategy, US and California wineries can carve out a strong presence here.”

Ikem, author of “Nigeria Wine and Spirits Market: Structure, Culture, and Regulation,” noted that shifting global trade dynamics have made Nigeria an attractive market. Rising tariffs and tensions between the US, Europe, and Asia have redirected attention to African markets.

While European producers have traditionally dominated Nigeria’s wine and spirits sector, Ikem believes there is room for US brands to gain ground. He outlined critical steps for success, including building relationships with local importers and distributors, ensuring regulatory compliance, and investing in brand building and consumer education

“Success in Nigeria’s wine market depends on more than just exporting products,” Ikem said. “It requires a long-term investment in collaboration, brand building, and consumer education.”

The 2025 California Wine Tasting Tour Africa, which includes stops in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, showcases over 150 wines from 15 award-winning California wineries. The event aims to build trade ties, introduce African markets to California’s wine diversity, and establish partnerships for long-term growth
