Nigeria’s internet usage has seen significant growth, with the latest statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) revealing a total of 142,161,409 active data internet users across various technologies as of January 2025.
“The growth in internet usage is a testament to the increasing demand for digital services in Nigeria,” said an NCC spokesperson. “We are committed to ensuring that all Nigerians have access to reliable and affordable internet services.”

GSM technology maintains the market lead with 141,655,587 subscribers, followed by wireless technology with 285,702 and VoIP with 206,067. Fixed Wired technology trails behind with only 14,053 subscribers.
The statistics also show a significant increase in the number of subscribers utilizing mobile GSM technology for internet usage, from 130 million in August 2024 to 141 million in January 2025
“The growth in mobile internet usage is driven by the increasing availability of affordable smartphones and mobile data plans,” said the NCC spokesperson. “We expect this trend to continue in the coming years.”
The NCC numbers also reveal that no data internet subscriber currently utilises the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology, indicating that new technologies have overtaken it.

As Nigeria’s internet usage continues to grow, the NCC is committed to ensuring that all Nigerians have access to reliable and affordable internet services. “Our goal is to bridge the digital divide and ensure that Nigeria is fully connected to the digital world,” said the NCC spokesperson.
The wireless technology maintained a steady number of subscribers, with 285,702 subscribers utilising the technology as of August 2024 and maintaining that number from August 2024 to January 2025.
The total number of subscribers utilising the VoIP technology saw a slight decline, from 199,960 in August 2024 to 206,067 in January 2025.
For the Fixed Wired technology, the total number of subscribers increased from 8,680 in August 2024 to 14,053 in January 2025.
The NCC statistics also revealed that the total number of active data internet subscribers across all technologies increased from 131 million in August 2024 to 142 million in January 2025.
“The growth in internet usage is a positive trend, and we are committed to ensuring that all Nigerians have access to reliable and affordable internet services,” said the NCC spokesperson.
The NCC’s efforts to promote internet penetration and digital inclusion in Nigeria are in line with the Federal Government’s digital economy agenda.
