Nigeria and the Kingdom of the Netherlands have entered into a new agreement aimed at enhancing trade cooperation between both countries.

The agreement will see the Nigeria Customs Service and the Netherlands Customs Administration work together to promote trade facilitation, strengthen border security, improve capacity development, and combat transnational organised crime.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Maiwada.

According to the statement, the agreement was reached in Brussels on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, during a meeting between the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, and the Director-General of Netherlands Customs, Mrs. Nanette van Schelven.

Commenting on the partnership, Adeniyi said the Netherlands Customs Administration has consistently demonstrated the importance of international collaboration in tackling emerging challenges associated with trade and border management.

He noted that the partnership would improve intelligence sharing, strengthen capacity-building initiatives, boost enforcement operations, and support efforts aimed at securing international supply chains while promoting legitimate trade activities.

The Comptroller-General described the agreement as a major achievement in the service’s international cooperation efforts and a reflection of the longstanding relationship between the customs authorities of both countries.

On her part, the Director-General of Netherlands Customs, Mrs. Nanette van Schelven, stated that both customs administrations face similar challenges within the increasingly interconnected global trading environment.

She said enhanced cooperation between the two institutions would encourage knowledge exchange, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen efforts to combat transnational organised crime while supporting transparent and efficient trade procedures.
